North House Gallery is delighted to present a third solo exhibition of work by Esmond Bingham. It consists of a large number of new 3D constructions, both huge and tiny, in a variety of ordinary materials, and a small number of works on paper. Although essentially non-representational, his work is concerned with the physical, emotional and psychological language of everyday things.
"Working with simple everyday materials I try to notice and develop unexpected visual or structural opportunities. The resultant work is usually a conjunction of the material’s attributes and my preoccupations at that time. I rarely have any clear idea of what the work could be until a possible end point comes into view. Ultimately my simple aim is to make a work which is emotionally and/or intellectually of interest."
"One of the exciting aspects of a solo show is the opportunity to show a number of works together. In the studio I develop several quite different things alongside each other; ideas echo or re-emerge in various guises, sometimes humorously. Whilst each work is an entity in itself I hope this cross-fertilisation will form part of the interest as the visitor journeys round the exhibition." - Esmond Bingham 2022
Esmond Bingham trained at Ulster College of Art & Design (1968-69 Foundation), Wolverhampton Polytechnic (1969-72 BA Fine Art), Goldsmiths College, London (1972-73 Art Teacher’s Cert) and Norwich School of Art & Design (1997-99 MA Fine Art). He maintained his studio practice while teaching as a part-time lecturer at Chelsea Scool of Art and subsequently, until retirement, as Associate Senior Lecturer at Middlesex University. He has exhibited in 18 solo shows and countless group and mixed exhibitions.
