Thomas Robinson

Recent Paintings

North House Gallery is pleased to present these buoyant paintings, heavy with paint, by Thomas Robinson. They are the result of two years’ work and comprise landscapes, portrait heads made from life and a series entitled "Greek Street", whose genesis was Piero della Francesca’s "‘Flagellation of Christ".

Thomas Robinson, born in 1979, trained at the Byam Shaw and the Royal Drawing School. Influenced by Bomberg and the Borough Group of painters, Robinson’s work has won its independence through long periods of isolation in the Channel Islands (2006-2010) and in East Anglia (from 2010) coupled with intense study of painting and sculpture from the past, a practice continued from art school.

Since 2012 he has worked mainly outside within seven acres of land in rural Norfolk. The same trees, flat areas of marsh, streams and pond form the locus of the landscapes. On the edge of the land his studio, its ceiling half glazed and full of a hot white light, creates a rain free space for the heads and "Greek Street" series.
