This exhibition is composed of North House Gallery owner/director Penny Hughes-Stanton's personal collection of prints, drawings, paintings and sculpture gathered incrementally over the last nineteen years. TAKING STOCK refers not only to the need to jump off the merry-go-round of monthly shows for a time, but also to the fact that with her main passion being for prints, she is able to sell duplicates from stock or, in the case of singular works, similar pieces from her favourite artists.
"The idea arose from the need to paint and refresh my living quarters, where pictures, once hung, do not tend to move. The gallery now looks great but the rooms upstairs are denuded and desolate without the pictures and objects which normally adorn them. Although by nature not overly acquisitive I have found the imperative to buy a particular work of art as a strange feeling located in the solar plexus, rather than in the head or the heart. I don't know if other people have the same sensation but this exhibition is a catalogue of the times when that imperative became irresistible (finances permitting); and these three months will determine whether this is a personal aberration or whether the joy of collecting art can be shared and transferred to others."
