ESMOND BINGHAM

New Constructions

Since Esmond Bingham's last solo show at North House Gallery in 2014 he has continued to develop and refine his distinctive constructions, as his contributions to three mixed shows have attested in the meantime. Now we are delighted to present a considerable body of new work whose humorous and imaginative élan is matched with an immaculate manufacture. The constructions can hang on a wall or sit on a table surface or floor, depending on the size, which varies markedly. They are made of unexpectedly ordinary materials like plywood or mdf and are painted in subtle colours, or not at all. The objects are both material and visual but the ideas derive less from their appearance than from how they present to the viewer.

"For some years I taught on Architecture and Design courses in Universities and the remnants of these interests continue to pervade my work. Recently, for instance, I have been attempting to make objects which, although they may inhabit the real world, are somehow not quite of it. This may be because viewpoints conflict or spatially they do not appear to obey the usual rules. We now live in a world of alternative truth. In some of these works the structure is not quite as it appears; however, the viewer’s eye will insist on believing the lie. Perhaps it is important at the present time to see how we easily collude in our own deception." - Esmond Bingham 2019

Esmond Bingham trained at Ulster College of Art & Design, 1968-69, Foundation Studies Wolverhampton Polytechnic, 1969-72, BA Hons, Fine Art Goldsmiths College, 1972-73, Art Teacher’s Certificate Norwich School of Art & Design, 1997-99, MA, Fine Art

This is his 16th solo or two person show since 1981 and he has shown in numerous group or mixed exhibitions since 1977 in East Anglia, London, Belgium, China, Finland and Russia. He has fulfilled commissions for Essex University, Broxboune Festival, the Highland Council, Scotland and the Spode Factory, Stoke-on-Trent. He has recently been awarded a residency at the Cill Rillaig Project, Ballinskelligs, Co. Kerry, Ireland.
