This exhibition celebrates the domestic. Susan Brinkhurst explores the subject of still life using a frottage technique worked on fabric. The bountiful heritage of still lifes offers many opportunities to both question the genre’s allegorical connections as well as explore more prosaic themes and contemporary ideas. Whether looking at presenting images of vegetables, exploring vanitas paintings, the traditions of Dutch bedriegertje or Spanish bodegones, Brinkhurst’s works manage to maintain a deeply rooted sense of ‘Englishness’ and quiet reflection.
Billy Lloyd's ceramics are also domestic, English and white. He has, in a very short time, established himself as a leading experimental maker and designer of pots of the purest kind: functional, beautiful, and often amusing in their quirkiness. Since his set of 50 unique mugs was bought for Terence Conran's 80th birthday, he has made or designed exclusive pieces for Fennica in Tokyo, SE5 Architects, Lalani & Co. at Brown's Hotel, and Arjun Waney's new Peruvian restaurant Coya, all in London. As well as a set of 25 unique jugs, there will be new tableware.
